About us

Streets of Equality was born from a deeply personal experience. As a legally blind individual, navigating my neighborhood isn’t just daily life—it’s an ongoing challenge, filled with obstacles that most people never notice. My fiancé, Michaela, who is also blind, shares this journey with me. Together, with our guide dogs by our side, we encounter firsthand the realities and risks of our streets and sidewalks. Rather than accept these conditions, we felt compelled to become advocates for change, working to build a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone. Streets of Equality is our way of turning lived experience into action.

Our core values

Streets of Equality is driven by the core value that access should be for everyone. Our commitment is to eliminate accessibility barriers in our community so that every person, regardless of ability, can navigate public spaces safely and independently. We believe in universal access—all streets and sidewalks should be accessible to all, not just some. Everyone deserves to fully participate in community life. We work to remove barriers and champion equal opportunities, so accessibility issues become a thing of the past. All people have the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and consideration in public spaces.

Challenges we address

We are committed to breaking down barriers between the community and city government to address the problems our community faces with current infrastructure. Whether the challenge is bicycle lanes, sidewalk conditions, or street conditions, we are here to champion the cause and will not remain silent. Streets of Equality stands for advocating improved safety, greater accessibility, and open communication so every voice is heard and every street can be safer and more welcoming for all.

Positive impact

We envision a city where the entire community can participate and have their voices heard. Through writing, research, gathering signatures, and community advocacy, we hope to show the city what our community truly wants and needs. Streets of Equality believes that creating real change means amplifying every voice, inspiring action, and building a more inclusive Berkeley for everyone.
